The second weekend of the season delivered no shortage of drama, with goals flying in across all three divisions and storylines beginning to take shape. From stunning comebacks and individual hat-trick heroics to one-sided routs and tense battles decided by a single strike, the action had it all. Early title contenders are starting to emerge while others are already facing questions about their defensive frailties. Here’s how the weekend’s fixtures unfolded.
PREMIERSHIP
Astley FC 1-6 Standish St Wilfrids
Astley started brightly and were rewarded when Luke Robinson struck in the 36th minute after being teed up by Ciaran Dowd. But Standish hit back immediately, Josef Dineley levelling just two minutes later to leave the game finely poised at the break.
The second half belonged entirely to Standish. Joseph Burkes edged them in front before Samir Sobeih took over with a sensational hat-trick, scoring in the 60th, 70th and 81st minutes. Substitute Jack Saunders also chipped in on 65 minutes, sealing a commanding 6-1 away win that underlined Standish’s ruthless attacking display.
Broughton Amateurs AFC 2-6 Shevington
It was a goal-fest at Broughton where Andrew Crossthwaite bagged a brace for the home side, but it wasn’t enough to halt a rampant Shevington. Ryan Crawford was unplayable, helping himself to a superb hat-trick.
Further goals from Samuel Glover, Bobby Joe Charlton from the spot, and Tashley Ncube rounded off the scoring in an emphatic 6-2 triumph, leaving Broughton with plenty to ponder after a difficult afternoon.
Eccleston & Heskin 5-3 Burscough Dynamo
This was an attacking spectacle, with Jordan Aird on fire for Eccleston & Heskin. He struck twice in the first half before completing his hat-trick after the break, while Ted Ball netted either side of half-time and Adam Leach capped the scoring late on.
Burscough Dynamo battled well, finding the net through Ryan Dobney, Cameron Groome and Robert Hill, but they were always chasing the game and couldn’t match the home side’s clinical finishing.
Hoole United 9-0 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs
Hoole United produced a demolition job, racing into a four-goal lead before half-time. Adam Thomas set the tone with two quick goals inside 10 minutes, before Tom Smith and Ben Rooke piled on the misery.
After the restart, Hoole went into overdrive. Thomas completed his hat-trick, Alexander Price-Preston and Joseph Westwood joined the party, and Rooke completed his own hat-trick with two more strikes. It was a devastating attacking masterclass that Southport & Ainsdale simply couldn’t live with.
Marsh United 2-1 Highgrove
Highgrove made the breakthrough through Daniel Lindsay, but Marsh United found their equaliser just before the break as Daniel Martin struck at a crucial time.
The second half was finely balanced until substitute Alfie Askew came on to make the difference, firing home the winner on 59 minutes to secure all three points for Marsh.
Walmer Bridge 4-2 Tarleton Corinthians
It looked all over for Walmer Bridge at the break as Tarleton Corinthians stormed into a 2-0 lead, with Lewis Bannister and Edward Latimer striking late in the half. The visitors were in full control going in.
But the second half belonged to one man – Dylan Chauhan. He turned the game on its head with four goals, each assisted by a different teammate, completing a stunning individual display and inspiring Walmer Bridge to a remarkable 4-2 comeback victory.
DIVISION ONE
Castle FC 1-3 Astley FC Reserves
Astley Reserves picked up an important away win thanks to a brace from Max Jackson and a well-taken goal from Sam Parkinson. Jackson’s opener came on 19 minutes before Parkinson doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark.
Castle pulled one back after the break, but Jackson struck again on 76 minutes to put the game beyond doubt and ensure a 3-1 victory.
Middleton & Overton Sports FC 0-1 Marsh United Reserves
A tight affair was settled by a single moment of quality. Connor Wallis found the net in the 25th minute, and that proved decisive as Marsh United Reserves kept their shape and saw out a gritty 1-0 win.
New Longton Rovers 0-3 AFC Ainsdale
AFC Ainsdale controlled the contest, going ahead just before the break through substitute Liam Mackie.
The visitors pressed home their advantage in the second half, with Patrick Staunton doubling the lead and Mackie striking again to complete a comfortable 3-0 away success.
Sir Tom Finney 3-6 Wyre Villa
This was a chaotic clash filled with goals. Charlie Wallace and Jordan Thomas struck to give Sir Tom Finney hope, and Vinnie Bradshaw added late on, but defensive frailties cost them dearly.
Wyre Villa were ruthless going forward, with Nico Moreton opening the scoring before Curtis Roskell stole the show with a brilliant hat-trick. Toby Smith also helped himself to a brace as Villa ran out convincing 6-3 winners.
Westgate Hawks 2-6 Fleetwood Hesketh
The Hawks started with intent, Conor Mason putting them ahead inside five minutes and Callum Whitcombe restoring their lead later in the half. But Fleetwood Hesketh responded superbly, with Luke Peason equalising and Scott Burns scoring spectacularly direct from kick-off. Ryan Wareing then edged them ahead before half-time.
After the interval, Fleetwood took complete control. Robert Hardaker struck on 70 minutes, before Wareing completed his hat-trick with two more late goals. The 18-year-old striker capped a man-of-the-match performance, sealing a 6-2 away victory.
Wigan Rovers 1-5 Tarleton Corinthians A
Nick Cookson did get on the scoresheet for Wigan, but it was a dominant day for Tarleton Corinthians A. John Ascroft bagged a brace and Robert Lamont’s hat-trick put the result beyond doubt.
The 5-1 scoreline reflected Tarleton’s superior quality, with their attacking trio proving too much for the home defence to handle.
DIVISION TWO
Appley Bridge Development 9-5 Bay Rangers FC Reserves
In an astonishing contest, Appley Bridge exploded into a 6-2 half-time lead, with Charlie Conlon, Daniel Tonge, Jordan Gore and James Lappin all on target. The goals just kept flowing as substitutes Liam Wragg and Jordan Heyes joined the fun.
Bay Rangers never gave up, hitting five of their own through Alex Boland, Glynn Carroll, Aron Jones (2) and Alan Mckeown, but the hosts’ firepower proved too much in a 14-goal thriller.
Bay Rangers FC 1-4 Southport Trinity
Tyrone Jameson gave Bay Rangers hope with a goal, but Southport Trinity were too sharp in front of goal.
Layton Galley, Louie Kearns and an Eric Thompson double sealed a 4-1 away victory, underlining their clinical edge.
Lostock St Gerards Blue 4-1 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs A
Lostock St Gerards Blue produced a commanding display, with Joshua Allan and Paul Farrow each bagging braces.
Kian Champion did manage a consolation for the visitors, but the 4-1 scoreline fairly reflected the home side’s dominance.
New Longton Rovers Reserves 6-1 Marsh United A
It was a convincing win for New Longton Rovers Reserves, who shared the goals around with David Alker, Ryan Cromie, Daniel Hodson, Jamie Morris and a Zak Slater brace all on the scoresheet.
Marsh United A pulled one back through substitute Matthew Squirrely, but it was only a brief respite in a one-sided encounter.
Ribchester Rovers 2-3 Hoole United Reserves
This was a real rollercoaster. Lewis Cawood opened the scoring for Hoole before Wesley Spencer equalised just a minute later. Jack Billington then struck to give Ribchester the lead early in the second half.
But Hoole weren’t done. Cawood grabbed his second to level the game before Mason Gunster popped up in the 75th minute to clinch a dramatic 3-2 away win.
Shevington Reserves 1-3 AFC Ainsdale Reserves
Sam Newton gave Shevington the early advantage, but their joy was short-lived as Liam Parker equalised almost immediately. The game remained finely balanced until the final stages.
AFC Ainsdale Reserves showed their quality late on, Stephen Nelson putting them ahead before Parker struck again deep into stoppage time to seal a hard-earned 3-1 win.
Wyre Villa Reserves 1-0 Broughton Amateurs AFC Reserves
A tight game was decided by a single goal, Charlie Davies proving the match-winner for Wyre Villa Reserves.
It was enough to secure all three points in a game of few chances, with defences largely on top.
