Mackie’s Miracle: AFC Ainsdale Stun Wyre Villa with Five-Star Comeback

If opening weekends are meant to set the tone, then AFC Ainsdale have just served up a thriller for the ages. Trailing 4–0 at half-time away to Wyre Villa Reserves, they looked dead and buried — until Patrick Staunton’s strike sparked a jaw-dropping turnaround. Liam Mackie then took centre stage, rattling in four goals in the final 22 minutes to complete an astonishing 5–4 victory that will be talked about for seasons to come. It was the pick of a weekend packed with goals, drama, and statements of intent across all three divisions.

PREMIERSHIP

Eccleston & Heskin 7–2 Broughton Amateurs AFC
It was a Jordan Aird masterclass in the opening 20 minutes, bagging a lightning-fast hat-trick (1’, 10’, 20’) to send Eccleston & Heskin into dreamland. William Kay added a composed finish on 35 minutes, and after the break, Matthew Thompson (55’) piled on the misery before subs Jacob Chew (78’) and Davies Henry (85’) rounded off the rout.

Broughton’s fightback was minimal, but Dane Westwood and substitute Michael Mathias did at least find the net to spare them a completely barren afternoon. Still, the visitors were swept aside by a home side brimming with clinical finishing and relentless tempo.

Shevington 2–3 Highgrove
Highgrove’s front line turned on the style in the first half, with Daniel Lindsay striking twice in quick succession (26’, 31’) before Bradley Diamond’s precise effort on 37 minutes gave them a commanding lead.

Shevington responded with grit — Joe Cahill and Ben Lyons both finding the net — but they couldn’t quite pull the game level. Highgrove leave with all three points after a ruthless first-half display and just enough defensive resilience in the second.

Standish St Wilfrids 3–1 Marsh United
Standish St Wilfrids found the breakthrough on 33 minutes through Ross Ellison before Samir Sobeih (56’) doubled the lead in the second half. Adam Simpkin’s composed finish on 72 minutes effectively sealed the deal.

Aaron Hoyle’s reply for Marsh United proved nothing more than a consolation as Standish’s mix of organisation and cutting edge ensured a strong start to their campaign.

DIVISION ONE

Astley FC Reserves 2–8 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs Reserves
Southport & Ainsdale Reserves set the tone early with Sean Doran’s opener on 10 minutes, followed by Tomas Wright’s first strike on 17. Charles Lunt made it three on 27 minutes before Wright bagged his second in the 37th. James Knott gave Astley a glimmer of hope with a 35th-minute goal, but the visitors went in 4–1 up at the break.

Wright completed his hat-trick on 67 minutes before Lunt grabbed another four minutes later. Jamil Campbell-Joseph (80’) pulled one back for the hosts, but late goals from substitutes Antonio Byron Berisha (88’) and Joe Gallan (90+2’) put the seal on a dominant away performance.

Castle FC 7–1 Tarleton Corinthians
Castle FC put on an attacking exhibition, breezing past Tarleton Corinthians with a commanding home performance. Aaron Blane grabbed Tarleton’s only goal, but the hosts’ firepower proved far too much over the 90 minutes.

Middleton & Overton Sports FC 1–3 Standish St Wilfrids Reserves
Ben Flynn broke the deadlock deep into first-half stoppage time (45+1’), with Jack Crowther adding a second just three minutes after the restart (48’). Alexander Favell’s late strike (86’) killed off any hopes of a comeback.

Oliwier Rusakiewicz gave the home crowd something to cheer with an 81st-minute goal, but Standish’s control and well-timed strikes earned them a deserved win.

New Longton Rovers 2–2 Wigan Rovers
It took 55 minutes for the deadlock to break, Lewis Blunt firing Wigan ahead, before Callum Bayliss doubled the lead on 66 minutes.

The hosts mounted a late surge — Dean Sumner pulling one back on 80 minutes, and Neil Bryne levelling with just two minutes to play — snatching a hard-earned point from what looked like certain defeat.

Westgate Hawks 0–6 Sir Tom Finney
Charlie Wallace was the star of the show with a hat-trick (18’, 21’, 75’), while substitutes Adrian Barbu (51’, 73’) and Pavan Babu (56’) joined the party in a dominant away performance.

Sir Tom Finney’s relentless forward play and clinical finishing left Westgate Hawks reeling, a warning to the rest of the division that they mean business.

Wyre Villa Reserves 4–5 AFC Ainsdale
Wyre Villa looked untouchable at half-time, leading 4–0 thanks to a Max Landless hat-trick and a James Lawrenson strike. But football can be cruel — and astonishing.

AFC Ainsdale launched one of the comebacks of the season: Patrick Staunton (60’) got them rolling before Liam Mackie went on a one-man mission, scoring four times (68’, 74’, 80’, 88’) to steal all three points in incredible fashion.

DIVISION TWO

Bay Rangers FC 2–1 New Longton Rovers Reserves
Leo Woodruff and substitute Charlie Horrocks got the goals for Bay Rangers in a hard-fought win. Ryan Cromie struck for the visitors, but the home side’s defensive grit held firm in the closing stages.

Broughton Amateurs AFC Reserves 2–0 Southport Trinity
Charles Whitworth was the hero with a brace, giving Broughton’s reserves a perfect platform to build momentum early in the season.

Chipping FC A 1–1 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs A
Nathan Crook netted for Chipping, but Jack Golding’s strike ensured the points were shared in a well-matched contest.

Hoole United Reserves 5–3 AFC Ainsdale Reserves
It was a blistering attacking display from Hoole United Reserves, with Lewis Cawood bagging a hat-trick, Ben Rooke adding one, and sub Bobby Mitton finishing the job.

AFC Ainsdale Reserves kept it interesting — Owen Highton scoring in the 5th minute, and Ciaran Smith adding a quickfire double (57’, 61’) — but Hoole’s forward line proved too hot to handle.

Lostock St Gerards 6–0 Wyre Villa Reserves
Paul Farrow stole the headlines with a hat-trick, supported by goals from Jordan Murdoch, Aaron Redding, and sub Joshua Allan.

Lostock’s relentless pressure and sharp finishing left Wyre Villa Reserves with no answers as the hosts cruised to a clean-sheet victory.

Marsh United A 2–3 Appley Bridge Development
Corey Neville (33’) and Oliver Lightfoot-Howells (36’) put Appley Bridge in control before James Lappin (71’) restored their two-goal cushion.

Substitute Aston Fawcett kept Marsh in it with goals on 54 and 82 minutes, but the visitors edged a tight contest through superior first-half play.

Ribchester Rovers 0–0 Shevington Reserves
A goalless draw, but hardly a dull affair — both sides created chances, yet neither could land the decisive blow in a game defined by defensive discipline.
