The weekend’s football served up drama across all three divisions on Saturday 30th August, with goals flying in, late twists, and standout individual displays lighting up the fixture list. From emphatic victories and high-scoring thrillers to cagey draws and gritty comebacks, every match had its own story to tell. Here’s how the action unfolded across the Premiership, Division One and Division Two.
PREMIERSHIP
Eccleston & Heskin 1-4 Astley FC
Astley FC turned on the style away from home, running out 4-1 winners against Eccleston & Heskin. Goals from Cieran Dowd, Nathan Hough, Luke Robinson and Charles Young ensured a dominant display from the visitors, who showed quality all over the pitch.
Eccleston & Heskin did find some consolation late on through Jordan Aird in the 70th minute, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback as Astley’s firepower proved too much on the day.
Highgrove 2-2 Standish St Wilfrids
Standish St Wilfrids looked to be cruising after goals from Ross Ellison on 20 minutes and Samir Sobeih just eight minutes later put them two up. Highgrove were rocked but managed to find a lifeline just before the break through Daniel Linsday.
That goal proved crucial as it set the stage for a spirited second-half fightback. Highgrove eventually found their equaliser ten minutes from time when Daniel Hammond struck, ensuring the points were shared in a thrilling contest.
Shevington 1-1 Burscough Dynamo
It was honours even between Shevington and Burscough Dynamo in a cagey 1-1 draw. Curtis Carberry was on target for the visitors, but Shevington’s reply — with their scorer unlisted — was enough to ensure the spoils were split.
Walmer Bridge 2-1 Marsh United
Walmer Bridge edged out Marsh United in a tightly fought clash. Liam Goggin broke the deadlock on 40 minutes before George Caney doubled the advantage midway through the second half.
Marsh United refused to roll over though, pulling one back through Theo Callendar in the 76th minute to set up a nervy finish, but Walmer Bridge held on for all three points.
DIVISION ONE
Castle FC 5-1 Westgate Hawks
Castle FC produced a dominant display, blowing away Westgate Hawks 5-1. Despite their scorers not being listed, the home side’s first-half blitz left Hawks reeling as they went in 3-0 down at the break.
Thomas Bennett grabbed a second-half consolation for Westgate, but Castle added more goals to cap off a commanding performance.
Marsh United Reserves 1-4 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs Reserves
Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs Reserves were in ruthless form as they brushed aside Marsh United Reserves 4-1. Conor Bligh was the star of the show, bagging a hat-trick with goals in the 14th, 75th and 87th minutes, while Jack Osborne also got in on the act.
Connor Wallis managed a goal for Marsh, but it was merely a footnote as Southport & Ainsdale’s quality shone through.
Middleton & Overton Sports FC 1-2 New Longton Rovers
Christian Roach opened the scoring in the 33rd minute for New Longton Rovers to give them the advantage at the break. Middleton & Overton hit back through Kieran Potts in the 76th minute to level matters.
But the decisive moment came just three minutes from time when Roach struck again to snatch victory for Rovers in dramatic fashion.
Wigan Rovers 5-3 Fleetwood Hesketh
Wigan Rovers came out on top in a goal-fest against Fleetwood Hesketh. Callum Bayliss and Graham Croft put Rovers two up inside half an hour before Jamie Roe added a third. Substitute Joseph Fairhurst then stole the show, scoring twice in quick succession on 70 and 75 minutes.
Fleetwood Hesketh battled bravely with goals from Daniel Grainger and a brace from Ryan Wareing, but it wasn’t enough to deny Wigan a deserved 5-3 win.
Wyre Villa 0-0 Tarleton Corinthians A
Defences were on top in a hard-fought goalless draw between Wyre Villa and Tarleton Corinthians A. Both sides cancelled each other out in a game of few clear chances.
DIVISION TWO
AFC Ainsdale Reserves 4-1 Lostock St Gerards Blue
AFC Ainsdale Reserves enjoyed a convincing 4-1 win, though their scorers weren’t listed. Joseph Topley grabbed the only reply for Lostock St Gerards Blue as the hosts took control of the contest.
Appley Bridge Development 2-4 Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs A
Southport & Ainsdale Amateurs A picked up a fine 4-2 away victory at Appley Bridge Development. Corey Forshaw got on the scoresheet, but the headlines belonged to Kian Gilbert, who netted a superb hat-trick to seal the points.
Bay Rangers FC Reserves 1-6 Ribchester Rovers
Bay Rangers made the perfect start when Matty Clarke struck after just eight minutes, but Ribchester Rovers came roaring back. Stirling Winder levelled before Wesley Spencer fired them ahead on 39 minutes.
The second half belonged entirely to Ribchester as Zach Short added a third before substitute Jack Greaves struck twice in quick succession. Spencer completed the rout with his second late on to cap a comprehensive 6-1 win.
Hoole United Reserves 3-2 Bay Rangers
Hoole United Reserves edged Bay Rangers in a thrilling 3-2 encounter. Lewis Cawood set the tone with an early goal before Alfie Parker doubled the advantage. Substitute Joe Dewhursh added a crucial third in the second half.
Bay Rangers responded with efforts from Leon Fitzpatrick and Tyrone Jameson, but Hoole held on to secure a narrow but deserved victory.
Marsh United A 0-8 Southport Trinity
Southport Trinity put on a show of attacking football as they demolished Marsh United A 8-0. George Holker was among the scorers, but it was Eric Thompson and Louie Kearns who each grabbed braces.
Substitute Jake Pilkington then ran riot, netting a remarkable second-half hat-trick to complete the rout in an unforgettable team performance.
New Longton Rovers Reserves 6-4 Wyre Villa Reserves
In one of the games of the day, New Longton Rovers Reserves edged Wyre Villa Reserves in a ten-goal thriller. Casey Armstrong opened the scoring before Ben Jackson grabbed a quickfire brace. Subs Karl Brooks and Jamie Morris also found the net as the hosts shared goals around in a 6-4 triumph.
Wyre Villa Reserves refused to go quietly though, with Tom Whiteside scoring and Nicholas Hardman-Apps bagging an impressive hat-trick. It wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit, but it made for an enthralling spectacle.
